We can say of a tool that it works, is efficient, gets the job done, is useful, lives up to our expectations, is better than the competitions, and serves our needs and wants.
To what extent could the same descriptions apply to a concept or a belief? Are some beliefs better than others because they are more useful when applied within our everyday lives?
The extent to which the definition of Pragmatism can be applied to beliefs is when that belief can be applied to many things and works well each time. It must be a reusable belief that reflects the machinations of the environment and can adapt to the environment.
ReplyDeleteOne such belief that Iktider would do well to learn and understand is not interrupting people when they speak. This belief works well and is pragmatic because one, people will like you better when you listen to what they have to say first, and two, people can pay more attention to you when they're not busy talking to someone else about something since they'll actually be able to listen to you and possibly do what you want them to do.
There are, of course, exceptions just as there are in every situation. Perhaps a person doesn't mind being interrupted, cut off, and losing their train of thought. Who knows? There are those who will put you on hold and talk to someone else when you were actually speaking to them first. These things happen. What can you do?
First of all, Why am I always being used as an example to demonstrate a point in philosophy? -_______-

We can say this about certain beliefs. I would say that to a certain degree, some beliefs are better than others. For example, I would value my belief on God more than my belief on always tying my shoelaces. If one day I did not tie my shoelaces, it would not be as a big of a deal if one day I did not believe in God. It would hold a much larger impact on my life than shoelaces. So I do believe that certain beliefs hold stronger value and usefulness in everyday live.
When I think about it I can actually agree with the statement. Some beliefs are better than others because they are more useful, but it also depends on the beliefs that you believe in. For example some horrible people in the world still believe that African Americans are lower class and think they shouldn't be able to walk around freely. Others believe that racism is completely wrong and immoral. When what you believe is moral and good it can be more useful then others.
ReplyDeleteThe extent in which these descriptions can be applied to a concept or belief as Chandanie mentioned, is when the concept or belief not only can be applied to several things but works well each and every time regardless of the circumstance.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that some beliefs are better than others because they are more useful when applied within our everyday lives. For instance, I believe that it is always best to tie my shoelaces when they are untied in order to prevent myself from tripping and possibly hurting myself. However, I also believe that if I witness someone dropping their wallet while walking down the street it is best to return it rather than take it for myself. The person may have important documents in their wallet such as, their license or car papers. Although, both beliefs are useful the second one is better because I am being a good citizen and possibly someone who may have seen me in this act (returning the wallet to the owner) may use that as an example in the future. The outcome of the second belief has a greater impact.
There are some concepts that are more useful but aren't necessarily better or valuable. Such as the concept of lying. Lying can take you to many great places, can cause people to like you better, and can help evade awkward situations. However, it does not mean that the concept of lying is more valuable. Though, there are many concepts and beliefs that are better than others simply because they are pragmatic. We all have different lifestyles and perspectives. So the beliefs that will be better and useful to one person, will be useless to another person. Someone who is keen on living a materialistic life will value ideas that make them rich. Whereas someone who wants to live a simple life will value ideas that give them inner peace.
ReplyDeleteBelief and concept can serve as a way to get the job done because it can affect your perception on a matter. Such an example would be the belief in the concept that working hard will get you places. It would allow you to find a reason to persevere instead of procrastinating.
ReplyDeleteDepending on the topic, there are some beliefs that are better than others because they are more useful when applied. As we get older, out perspectives change and we grow wiser. I was able to understand religion more as I got older. Religion can affect our moral values, which in turn reflects onto our actions. My belief in my god seems more useful than my belief in Santa Claus when I was younger because it is something I can carry with me as I get older.

ReplyDeleteYou are stating that if a tool works, it is efficient, gets the job done, is useful, lives up to our expectations, is better than the competitions, and serves our needs and wants. To what extent can you apply this is to a concept or a belief? Well, you can pretty much say most of it. Some beliefs produce more moral and useful results than others. For example, my belief of being polite to others will make me seem more moral in general society than a person who is constantly impolite.
ReplyDeleteTo continue, some beliefs over the others will provide better results or be more useful if productivity is being used as a evaluation factor for usefulness. Keep in mind, I said USEFUL not more in value. Linking to what Ishrat said, "There are some concepts that are more useful but aren't necessarily better or valuable." I definitely agree with this statement because some beliefs can be useful to receive certain results but they may not be more valuable. For example, cheating can help to attain great results but it is not a valuable idea. Usefulness and value may not always be connected when it comes to beliefs or certain concepts.
I believe that beliefs serve as personal fulfillment to people individually because people are different in general. I might feel more successful with my own beliefs, such as common courtesy. I feel good when I do little things such as hold a door for someone, but someone else might hold a different belief or moral in which they feel practicing their religion is better than helping people with such minor actions. It all depends on the people and what they believe is better for themselves.
ReplyDeleteSome beliefs are better than others because they are more useful when used in our lives. For example I believe that always have to give your mother full respect and if u do disrespect her always apologize. I also believe in manners like using the basics of good morning, thank you, sorry, and good morning on your everyday life if needed. I think both beliefs are very important because I was raised early that always say thank you and please. I believe if u have manners shows you come from a good household
ReplyDeleteSome beliefs or and idea are better than others. This greatly depends on ho it affects one person, a group of people, or an entire nation of people. Some ideas may be geared towards the future, that will pay off for society down the road, but not right now. Ideas that society considers better are th ones that work for us right now, that will give us the results we want in the fastest amount of time possible. For example, after 9-11, the decision was made that we were to immediately go after those who we held responsible for tue attack. Had we waitied until we kne for sure maybe people would not hve supported it as much as they did, especially with all the emotions involved. I think that it was the right decision to start tracking them down and eventually we found them and killed all of them.
ReplyDeleteI agree that some beliefs are more useful than others when applied to our everyday lives. Some of our beliefs are more important and carry more significance than others. Take for example a belief in which someone beliefs in God and their religion and they try to live life every day following their belief of God and all that has to do with their religion. For example they will go to church everyday, not eat meat every friday, etc, pray every day and so on; will guide them to have a life in which religion is the main guide and try to uphold moral goodness. This belief is more important than lets say a belief of doing your home work because although each hold great significance the belief in your religion and ultimately God will guide that person in living the life they want.
ReplyDeleteI agree that some beliefs are better than others. I think beliefs that are more practical and that we apply to everyday life are less important than the ones we believe are going to help us throughout our entire lives or after. The extent to which pragmatism is defined would apply to beliefs. Beliefs are good but if they aren't exactly practical and you can't live by them I don't think they're as effective.
ReplyDeleteThe extent that the definition of Pragmatism can be applied to beliefs are when said belief can be applied to many things and work correctly each time. I do not agree that some beliefs are better than others. I think all beliefs and views are important, but some affect others differently that may have a greater impact. Some ideas and values may seem more important in that time frame of moment, but later they may not be as important, but all thoughts are important, the effect of the impact of the value or idea is what makes it seemingly more important.
ReplyDeleteThe extent of the use of the belief usually lies inside the means of the extremes. Most ideas and beliefs can be applied to everyday scenarios but when you twist them and throw in moral dilemmas that is when they are truly tested. A good example of this is, lets say I believe in always telling the truth. I tell the truth everyday and because of this people recognize and award me for my honesty. Now if we amplify the situation by saying I have knowledge of threat and if I were to tell about it my family would be killed. The belief is now being truly tested.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ishrat and Fairooz when they say that there is a fine line between usefulness and the value of a belief. Not all beliefs are better than others solely because they are useful. You cant really live your life the way that you want to when you are just going by what is useful to you at that given time and place. You're beliefs would then hold no place as you're only belief would be "I'm going to believe in something strongly because it gets me out of a situation faster until it fails me."
