“Asking the right questions.”-This is what philosophy is all about. Philosophy thrives on asking questions that make people think.
Please answer this Thought Provoking Question (TPQ): When was the last time you tried something new? What was it?
Lately, I've been trying to become a better student. Freshman and sophomore year I was a pretty big slacker and didn't feel school work was that important. However, I now believe that if I want to have a chance at leading a successful adulthood, I have to work to get into at least a decent university. As of now I don't know what I plan to take as my profession, but I want to have as many options as possible. Besides creating opportunities for myself, I also want to develop a habit of becoming a productive worker. That will help me not just in school, but throughout my entire life no matter what I choose to pursue.

*sighs* If you are defining new as in something that was never done before according to the individual, then I would say that the last time I tried something new was yesterday. Though very minor, I decided to not study for my psychology (a subject I like and find easy to understand) quiz on neurons for a long period of time. This is probably the first time I haven't studied for more than an hour for any test or quiz relating to the subjects I study in school. I am a very by-the-book orientated person and like to be prepared for the quizzes and exams I take in my educational career. However, I have realized that occasionally, I rely too much on studying for a long period of time, the day before the exam day. Sometimes I don't pay attention to the lessons given by the teacher, and just wait for the day before the quiz or exam to study the topics that will be covered. Those day-befores become extremely long and tiring due to me studying for long periods of time. This shouldn't be done because it creates a mental imbalance of processed information, at least it seemed so for me. Plus, one always will not have long periods of time to study for an exam or quiz. This is because with age, comes more responsibilities that consume time. It is good to study but you should always be in constant study, not just studying the day before to ace the test or quiz. This statement has been proved in countless experiments.
ReplyDeleteIn order for me to slap myself with the reality that I rely too much on last minute studying, I would have to see what information I could process in my mind without studying last minute. I am the type of person who hates change and I know that I will not change unless something significant happens. Not studying was my way of trying to go into reality and facing the fact that I may not always have time to study, so I should pay attention to all the lessons at the time they are given. The quiz would affect my grade, so it became my motivation to pressure my brain, and will eventually lead to stop studying the day before just to pass the quizzes or tests.
The last time I tried something new was Monday. I was in a meeting with Ms Delilo reviewing my credits and what I need achieve for my advanced regents. During the meeting we went into how I want to go to college for directing. I personally feel like directing is what I am going to be doing, this is what I am very passionate for and I will stick with it. At the same time I thought how naive would it be for me to just believe this will definitely be the career I will stick with. I always hear college students change their majors 3 to 4 times; that could be me a year from now. So I brought the thought to the attention of the guidance counselor, that I want to try a different elective other than my video editing class. She nodded and quickly checked the data base for classes with open spots. Philosophy was the only elective with a seat open, I thought to myself "Philosophy, The study and understand of knowledge; It definitely sounds like something I'll be interested in."
ReplyDeleteI Naturally have a unslakable thirst for knowledge so it appealed to me immediately. If you would like a more direct answer for the second question basically me studying philosophy is something new I am tackling.
I can already see a top box office movie with your name on it! "A major motion picture directed by Evan Yearwood."
DeleteThank you Chandanie, I appreciate that.
DeleteHonestly , I can't remember trying anything new accept new artist in music. I don't really like new or unfamiliar things. I never have. They make me anxious. I think its because I'm mentally unstable but any other person would think it normal to not like trying new things. Every once in a while I decide to listen to an artist I've heard or really listened to. After I do start to listen to them I usually develop unhealthy obsessions with them. But I'm perfectly fine with that.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I experienced something new was today in my public speaking class. For a few weeks now, we had been strategizing our affirmative position on the resolution of whether it is morally permissible to kill one innocent person to save the lives of many innocent people. I have never been in an actual debate where I stood amongst 30 people in a classroom arguing my points. Usually I am one to watch and observe and give input. I volunteered to do the construction for my group, meaning I was the first person up defending and establishing our points. I am not accustomed to speaking into front of a crowd. It was a scary experience because we were the first group to debate and I was the first person to speak amongst the two groups. Usually when I have to speak in front of others, I get nervous and my heart races. It was one of the many debates I will partake in, in high school as well as college. It is an experience I can relate back on to see what I can do to better myself as a speaker for future references.
ReplyDeleteWow, the last time I tried something new? I can't really remember too well because I don't tend to do a lot of things that are different or new. But I guess something different for me was when I went to comic con two weeks ago with my cousin and we went to an art panel to help get tips on how to teach. While I was there I was thinking about how closely animators and screenwriters work, and my cousin who wants to be an animator, I kind of thought about how interesting it'd be to become a screenwriter.
ReplyDeleteI haven't gotten around to writing an episode of a show that I've been planning in my head, but I always have ideas pooling around in there. I might eventually write out an episode of something, but after I do more research on how to write a proper screen written episode or how to write an interesting one.
The last time I had tried something new was towards the very end of summer. It was learning how to drive. This experience was absolutely amazing and it felt so brand new. I had never been behind the wheel in the drivers seat before. Adjusting the mirrors and changing the gear felt like a completely different experience. At the moment I am practicing for my license. Hopefully, I'll be able to get one as soon as possible :D.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I tried something new was Monday, October 22, 2012.
ReplyDeleteThanks to an acquaintance of mine I was able to experience the PSVita firsthand which I'd say is a bigger, touch-screen version of the PSP (PlayStation Portable)that has two analog sticks, a back touch panel, and technology similar to the SIX-AXIS feature of a PlayStation3 controller.
I played a little bit of a game (the shape of the games remind me of a DS game card, yet they come in cases that are like miniature video game jackets--they're so cute!) that was a part of the Uncharted series and it was pretty cool.
You can slide your finger along the terrain to create a path for Drake to traverse and when you engage in physical combat you touch the screen in specific ways to fight.
A neat way of utilizing the back touch panel that my acquaintance showed me was when hanging onto a vine you slide your fingers down one after the other and Drake will ascend the vine! Also when swinging on a rope you can tilt the Vita from side to side to activate the SIX-AXIS technology and have Drake swing back and forth accordingly.
I had a good experience with the PSVita, but I'm going to stick to my PSP 3000 for now.
The last time that I tried something new was last month when we began school once again. It was in our philosophy class that our instructor, Dr. Birgeles exposed us to Cornell Notes. I had never heard of Cornell Notes before and I was a bit skeptical on using this strategy because it was so new and different to me. Cornell Notes simply means that you take your paper and divide it vertically about 2" from the left side and then on the smaller section of the paper you write the topics discussed in class, subtitles, headings and or any questions you had during class. Then on the opposite side where there is more room available you write your notes and on the bottom you write a 3-4 sentence summary of the lesson for that day. I learned that Cornell Notes is an efficient way of taking notes during class that saves time and is very organized thus, when studying for an upcoming test or quiz it helps recall the important information much quicker. Usually I am the type of person who likes to stay within my comfort zone and what I am usually accustomed too. I only like change occasionally however, this style of notes has helped me maintain organized/ clear notes in my class.
ReplyDeleteAs Jasmine had stated, the last time I did something new was today. I engaged in a group debate with my classmates. I've never had a debate with anyone aside from my brothers. I was nervous because I generally don't like talking, especially in front of a larger number of people. Though my role was not a major one, I wish that I never speak publicly again. Aside from that, I cannot really remember doing anything different. My life is pretty routine.
ReplyDeleteThe last time i tried something new was on Sunday. I finally broke the nerves of using spray paint to do graffiti on the walls in my room. I was afraid of messing it up because you cant fix mistakes or make outlines of how you're going to spray the paint. If you mess up in anyway such as, holding the can to close, it drips really bad. If you hold it too far, it just mists all over which looks really untidy unless that's the look you are going for. It was definitely a great outcome even though I was freaking out the whole time of doing it.
ReplyDeleteI do not remember a time of when I had tried something new. I'm a person who doesn't believe in changing routine or changing one's self. I always go with the flow of time, and let the wind blow me in any direction that it desires. I don't mess with the "fabric" of my life so there is an addition to it, or something new to it. I apologize, but I can't really answer this question.
ReplyDeleteI really don't do things differently. I like to keep a routine that I do daily and i do not like to stray away from it. The very last new thing that I have experienced was going in to school one period later on mondays and tuesdays. This is different from the rest of my schedule because I have to come in first period wednsday through friday. However, this isnt such a ba thing because i get to sleep an hour later on mondays and tuesdays. That was the last new thing I have experienced.
ReplyDeletelast time I tried something new was last night, I mixed red velvet cake and vanilla ice-cream. The two flavors together tasted amazing. I still have a box of ice-cream and 1/4 of the cake left, I plan on eating them together every night for desert until it finishes.
